Event Details

Perhaps one of the most important parts of a cycling enthusiast's gear is the bicycle helmet. It gives their head adequate protection it needs to be able to handle nasty falls, collisions, or some other unforeseen accidents which can occur when they are riding their bicycles. It is therefore important that the helmets they wear can withstand the impact that may result from these accidents. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has set a standard for all bicycle helmet manufacturers to follow to make sure that the bicycle helmets they produce can accord the cycling enthusiast the protection that he needs.

Nowadays, those helmets are constructed with several parts, each performing a distinct function that help the cyclist avoid any head injury he may sustain as a result of the accident. One of the most important parts of the modern helmet is the foam polymer layer that lines the interior of the head gear. Most of these foam polymer layers are made of expanded polystyrene, specifically preferred by most manufacturers because it is very easy to fabricate and shape. The expanded polystyrene is subjected to a rigid production process which involves reinforcing it with nylon, or metal mesh, for maximum strength.

Several layers are then joined together, each with different densities to efficiently manage and spread the impact energy, allowing the softer layers to handle lesser impacts and the harder layers to deal with the really hard hits. The expanded polystyrene is then shaped to comfortably fit the head of the cyclist, but allowing several crush areas to protect the head and the brain from being jolted or jarred. Cuts are then made to serve as air ventilation to allow the wind to cool the head of the cyclist while in speedy motion.

The foam polymer is then fitted onto a thin shell which will then absorb the initial energy impact before passing it to the liner. The shells are aerodynamically designed to reduce the drag which can affect the speed and strength of the cyclist, allowing them to cut through the invisible wind wall more quickly. Like the liner, air vents which are aligned with the polymer liner are also made on the shell to allow wind to pass through the surface of the head.
